Mini Dream Kitchen

15.12.20

The next creative project I decided to work on after the dollhouse was a kitchen room box. I still had so many left over supplies after making the house that I decided to not waste, but create!

I found some images on Pinterest that really inspired me and basically sketched out a design, with some measurements and colors, and went for it!

Most everything is handmade or customized from something purchased online.

Here are a few behind the scenes of the build and process. This also included designing a stool and having it 3D printed. I printed it in clear (because it was the cheapest) and ended up painting it to look like mahogany. I also made small handles for the cabinets based on these that I had found online and ordered for my own home.

In the Winter of 2017, I built a dollhouse. I am not sure what inspired me to create in that medium (as I had never made anything tiny before), but I was a woman obsessed with the idea of designing a mini version of a dream home. At the time, my boyfriend and I were renovating our house and he was not as keen on putting floral wallpaper in the bedroom or me building furniture. What was a girl supposed to do!?! Build a tiny house filled with every idea her boyfriend put his nose in the air to? YUP!

Before just in case he reads this and thinks I am badmouthing him, I am not. He is delightful. But relationships are about compromise and floral wallpaper was something I was willing to sacrifice to have some other fun things added in.

Anyway, I bought a kit from a local craft store and made some adjustments based on my skillset and what I thought would look good. I bought a few minis from around the internet (Etsy and Ebay were my go-to's) and decided to make most of the rest.

Here is the house in its finished state!

And just for sh*ts and giggles - here are a few behind the scenes of the process and of some of the items I made.

A pretty cool side effect of the dollhouse was being recognized for it! Cedar and Moss ended up reaching out about to me after I posted a picture of a light that I made - using one of their pendants as inspiration - and they re-posted my image on their page. SO COOL!

I also had the company Tastemade reach out to me in early 2018 asking if they could ask me some questions about my dollhouse. OF COURSE I said yes! After the interview, they ended up sending a film crew from LA to Minneapolis and made a video about my process! So cool!

And last, but not least, a casting agent reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in being on NBCs show Making It. I ended up interviewing and talking about my love of crafting to a few people but decided it was not a good fit at that moment in my life (I was dealing with some personal things and was not sure if I could commit my time).

Overall, what started as a fun project for me to manage my anxiety turned in to sort of being my 15 minutes of fame. Who knew.

What do you think? Would you have done anything differently? Are you inspired to make your own dollhouse now?
